"Taking a Principled Position on Software Freedom" - Mako

Jul 19

I rarely ever would consider republishing someone else's content on this blog, if it had already been published elsewhere.

I feel, however, that Benjamin Mako Hill's essay and blog post "Taking a Principled Position on Software Freedom" deserves special treatment.

It was the softly spoken and thought provoking nature of the piece, making subtle points about the differences between using the best software available and using free software that caught my eye and convinced me it was worth sharing with the wider community.

Stephen Fry explains free software

Stephen Fry explains free software

The FSF have released a video of Stephen Fry explaining free software for GNU's 25th Birthday Party.

I am trying to get Freedom Socks on the case, to get a podcaster's view on it.

Update 1: I have secured an interview with Matt Lee, FSF campaigns manager for the Freedom Socks podcast.
Update 2: Please vote the story up on Firehose, Digg, reddit, FSDaily
Update 3: The submission I made to Slashdot is now a story :)
Update 4: Freedom Socks have released a new episode interviewing Matt Lee from the FSF.

Disclaimer: I host one of the official mirrors of the video.

What does *your* laptop look like?

May 11

My ageing laptop is somewhat trademarked:
My laptop
For the record the sticker on the top right represents a sailing boat and stands for GDSC Glossop and District Sailing Club.
On the left of it is a sticker from the Free Software Foundation, in the top left is one from LUG Radio, between it and the Bad Vista sticker is a GPLv3 sticker. In the middle the GNU's head and the GNU + Linux sticker both represent GNU, whilst the sticker on the bottom right is from DefectiveByDesign.

What ever they tell you, you can never have enough stickers.

Is your laptop anything like as stickered as mine?
